Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) Wiki

Welcome to the new JATS Wiki!

The Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) is a standard (NISO Z39.96-2015) that defines a set of XML elements and attributes for tagging journal articles and describes three article models.

Supporting documentation for the standard (schemas and tag libraries) is available from the US National Library of Medicine (NLM). JATS is a continuation of the NLM Archiving and Interchange DTD work begun in 2002 by the US National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).

All of the schema files associated with the JATS are available by anonymous FTP.

Tag Sets

The tag set documentation is available on the NLM site. An alternative view of the same documentation, based on the open-source jatsdoc framework, is also available, here.

Currently, the most recent versions of the various tag sets are:

Tag Set latest draft (stable release) official version
Journal Archiving and Interchange ("green") 1.2d1 1.1 (in jatsdoc)
Journal Publishing ("blue") 1.2d1 1.1 (in jatsdoc)
Article Authoring ("orange" or "pumpkin") 1.2d1 1.1 (in jatsdoc)
Book Interchange Tag Suite (BITS) n/a 2.0 (version 1.0 in jatsdoc)

See more tag sets in Applications.

Using this Wiki

You do not need any account to look around this wiki. But, if you would like to edit existing pages, create new pages, or participate in discussions you will need to create an account.

When you have your new account, you also might want to check out your Preferences to set up email notifications and various other things.

If you have comments or suggestions, or would like to report a problem related to this wiki (as opposed to JATS itself), please create a new section on the main talk page. Or, if you'd rather, send a message to the JATS mailing list.

JATS official versions

JATS was published as the standard ANSI/NISO Z39.96-2015, version 1.1, in January 2016. It is available as a PDF document and as HTML at http://jats.niso.org/ .

The JATS Standing Committee is responsible for ongoing maintenance of the standard:

Changes to the Tag Suite have always been user-driven. User-suggested changes are collected and discussed by the Working Group who decide on action. The intent is to put this standard under continuous maintenance, and allow the standard to continue to change based on user comment.

Users can submit comments to the group to report bugs, request changes to the content model of certain elements, or request new features. The public list of comments received to-date is on the document landing page. If comments involve changes to the standard, and are accepted by the Standing Committee, the standard will be revised pursuant to a Continuous Maintenance procedure approved by ANSI. The committee is required to respond to all comments within 3 months and release a new version of the standard at least once every 5 years.

The responses to comments will be published and made available from the NISO JATS Workroom page.

Currently the committee expects to submit a new version for NISO approval approximately once every year.

See the Resources page for more tips about how to find relevant documents.

Draft versions of non-normative supporting material

Between official versions of the standard, changes will be made on an ongoing basis to non-normative supporting information such as the schemas and tag libraries hosted at jats.nlm.nih.gov. These are planned to be released quarterly and are named version 1.2d1 ("draft 1 of version 1.2"), 1.2d2 ("draft 2 of version 1.2"), etc.
